Strengthening women as a future pillar of the Tunisian economy

Tunisia has a wealth of women’s skills capable of making a difference in the growth rate of the national economy. The country aspires to double the number of women owners of small and medium-sized enterprises and facilitate their access to different business sectors in the future.

In order to encourage female entrepreneurship in Tunisia, a “National Strategy for the Promotion of Female Entrepreneurship in Small and Medium Enterprises by 2035” is currently being developed with the support of the “Qualification and Labour Market (FORMAT)” project mandated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ Tunisia in cooperation with the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training (MEFP).

On 3 July 2023, Mrs. Amel Belhadj Moussa, Tunisian Minister of Women launched the elaboration of the strategy during a national workshop under the patronage of the Head of Government.

The Minister affirmed – in the presence of Mrs. Leila Belkhiria, President of the National Chamber of Women Entrepreneurs- that Tunisia has a wealth of women’s skills capable of making a difference in the growth rate of the national economy. In order to realise this potential, the strategy aims to move female entrepreneurship away from micro-enterprises and the creation of livelihoods towards the creation of small and medium-sized enterprises, strengthening women’s contribution to the realization of wealth through competitive projects capable of creating additional jobs.
