Breaking Ground: Exploring the Gendered Impact of the Energy Transition on Mining Communities

31.05.2023, 10:45-11:45 AM (CEST)

This side event at the margins of the BMZ High-Level Forum on Mineral Supply Chains will be jointly organized by the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) and the multi-stakeholder group Women’s Rights and Mining, of which GIZ currently chairs the Secretariat, and will pursue the question: “what does the energy transition mean for women and marginalized groups in local communities living in proximity to minerals’ extraction that are critical for the energy transition?”. The event aims to provide a better understanding of the potential opportunities and challenges for women’s economic empowerment and livelihoods, community resilience, and mitigating potential negative impacts on marginalized groups living in proximity to mineral extraction. The main topics to be discussed include feminist development policy in resource governance, impacts of increased demand for minerals on economic empowerment and livelihoods, and mitigation of negative impacts through enablers such as impact assessments, data, and technology. Practical examples will be offered from policy to local perspectives.
