Gender & Religion – NICD Working Group Gender

NICD WG Gender

invites you to a WG meeting and talk on

Gender & Religion

with the Sector Project Religion for sustainable Development, Project Equal Opportunities and Social Development (EOSD) in Egypt and Islamic Relief Germany

13th March 2024, 10.30-12.00 CET

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you all to discuss the role of religious actors in promoting gender equality. There is growing realization in gender studies that the basic attitude of secular feminists in relation to religious actors produces an imbalance if religion is primarily understood as an obstacle and as an expression of cultural difference. For a sustainable feminist development policy, cooperation with religious actors is crucial. Feminist development policy and other strategic guidelines (f. ex. Gender Action Plan) are addressing the continuing importance of religion as a source of meaning and value.  But the evidence about the successful cooperation with religious actors is hardly known. In this WG meeting, we want to showcase that religious actors make a substantial contribution to the implementation of gender-equitable guiding principles and discuss challenges and success factors.

  • Introduction by Timo Biank (project lead) and Mona Hein (advisor) (SP Religion for sustainable Development)
  • Inputs from the Countries
    • Mali – Lessons learned from the Pilot Project: “Empowered Faith Communities on Child Protection and reduction of Gender-Based Violence, especially FGM”, Islamic Relief Germany
    • Egypt – Lessons learned from the Pilot Project: “Human-rights based premarital counselling through religious actors”, GIZ Project Equal Opportunities and Social Development (EOSD)
    • Armenia – The Armenian Apostolic Church’s Historical and Contemporary Views on Gender Equality, Sona Grigoryan
  • Discussion

Please feel free to forward this invitation.

Looking forward to an interesting session,
