In March 2023, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) will launch its Feminist Development Strategy. The policy was already announced in early 2022, raising questions about what it would imply, especially for implementing agencies like GIZ Ghana and development cooperation in different contexts. Aiming to demystify feminism, GIZ Ghana organizes an event on International Women’s Day to delve into Ghanaian feminist movements, efforts, and challenges that still exist. A German feminist development cooperation aims at building and strengthening existing feminist approaches, taking the reality of the local context into account instead of copy-pasting concepts in a top-down approach. Therefore, the event aims at creating a platform to discuss the discourses of feminism in Ghana. Apart from development partners and other stakeholders, the event will be live-streamed on social media to reach a broader audience in the general public. Strong Ghanaian voices will deconstruct the myth that feminism is a Western concept and share how gender activists, individuals, and organizations have been striving for more gender equality for decades.
