GIZ INDIA GENDER WORKSHOP ꟾ LGBTIQ* Inclusion in German Development Cooperation

Join us for a virtual workshop with colleagues from Sector Program Human Rights and the GIZ Rainbow Network. The discussion and workshop would aim to bring about a common understanding on the importance of Diversity and Inclusion specific to German Development Cooperation. A Great Opportunity to also understand key concepts such as sexual orientation, gender identity and also specific reference to global perspective of GIZ and BMZ/AA on addressing and managing LGBTIQ+ issues, including the BMZ’s LGBTI Inclusion Strategy.

Context
Achievements made towards gender justice and equality are threatened by a global rise of anti-democratic, anti-gender and anti-LGBTQI+ movements from both government and civil society institutions and actors alike. As a result, spaces for gender equality are shrinking in various countries, as laws are being enacted that openly favor patriarchal normativity or reverse previously established rights of groups that have been systematically and structurally discriminated against, particularly women in all their diversity and LGBTQI+ persons.
Raising awareness and further understanding of inequality and forms of discrimination can help to combat gender-based violence (GBV), raise women’s empowerment and inclusion in development efforts as well as integrate gender transformative and LGBTIQ+ inclusive approaches.
The LGBTI Inclusion Strategy by the Federal Foreign Office and BMZ, sets out that gender transformative interventions should be thought inclusive and non-binary, and that German development cooperation should effectively support and include LGBTQI+ persons.
Background
The situation for LGBTQI+ people in India is two-folded. On one hand, in 2018 the Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality and Indian passports are available with an “O” sex descriptor (for “Other”). On the other hand, many inequalities continue to exist. For example, India does not recognize same-sex marriage or civil unions and no legislative law has been enacted to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment.
Objective
The workshop will serve to transfer knowledge to sensitize and train GIZ staff on issues related to diverse sexual orientation and gender diversity, and cooperation with LGBTQI+ civil society. It gives the opportunity to discuss and consider LGBTQI+ inclusion in their daily work as well as in their projects.
Expected outputs:
- Participants understand key concepts such as sexual orientation and gender identity, expression, sex characteristics, LGBTQI+ abbreviation, etc.
- Participants are aware of the global perspective of GIZ and BMZ/AA on addressing and managing LGBTQI+ issues, including the LGBTI Inclusion Strategy, feminist Development Policy.
- Participants reflect on how they can incorporate this knowledge into their daily work (e.g. language, project implementation, capacity development and have a better understanding of a conducive and enabling working environment
