•• A two-day workshop for community journalist women and the Catholic Radio stations to discuss matters of leadership and policies in our media houses. In our newsrooms, sexual harassment and sexual violence is a problem and most of our stations do not have policies that guides them and sets clear standards of accepted behavior. These policies are key factors that might help shape our media houses, provide security for the journalists and help them secure their jobs. With both genders being considered, women are the most vulnerable when it comes to sexual harassment and sexual violence in the work place. • Community broadcasting in Kenya plays a significant role as far as enhancing transformative social change is concerned. Through different programs in our stations, they have peace programs that unifies the communities despite our different cultures and diversity. With this taking place already, there are factors and policies that are not addressed clearly in our newsrooms.
• UMOJA Radio for Peace has identified this gap with the help of some women journalists. The two-day training will ensure our journalists understand the difference between sexual harassment and sexual violence and the legal actions that they need. The training will also provide a platform where the journalists can come up with policies that governs their newsrooms.
• Another element of the workshop is the training on leadership because in our newsrooms we have less women in the top positions mainly linked to the culture of media “Boys Club.”
• This training will give women a platform and a safe space to work in peace at their workplace and come up with policies that will provide a safe environment to all media practitioners in future.
