Enhancing women’s participation in Economic Empowerment- Engendering the Economic Tools of Development

Agenda: Agenda Fachaustausch mit der Wissenschaft Economic Empowerment

“Women´s economic empowerment in the changing world of work” was the main topic of this years´ Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). The World Economic Forum as well as the G7 and the G20 put their attention to and weight behind the economic empowerment of women.

Diversity and full participation are essential for fostering the resilient, sustainable and viable growth of stable economies and societies, whereas homogeneous systems bear risks and uncertainties.

In regards to the globally-agreed Agenda 2030 with special focus on SDG 5, ‘Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’, it is crucial to think ahead and to focus on how women participate in the labour market. Labour Market Inclusion aims towards increasing the labour market participation rate and the value of work traditionally done by women.

Moreover, promoting female entrepreneurship and access to finance for women took center stage at the W20Summit. Female entrepreneurship as well as women’s access to finance, including full legal capacity for all women, should be promoted by improving access to credit and investor networks, training, information services and technical support.

Which barriers hinder women and gender minorities from full participation in the labour market? How does Economic Empowerment intersect with questions of the Digital Change? Which role plays the private sector turning the SDG 5 pledges into reality?

Academics and practitioners came together to share insights into their work and discuss the following topics:

It transpired for example that a number of different academic disciplines address Women’s Economic Empowerment in their research. A group of discussants presented and discussed work on entrepreneurship focusing on social networks, businesses in relation to education and growth, practical procedures of Gender-Diversity Management and analysis of labor market and employment. Current debates on evaluations of the effectiveness of development cooperation emerged as a topic of shared interest for a potential follow up meeting.
