What are your associations when you think of non-state armed groups?

The image of female combatants might not be the first image that comes to mind. However, up to 30 percent of the members of non-state armed groups worldwide are women. Little is known about their diverse roles in conflict settings – Their perspectives and needs are often not considered in peace processes and post-conflict transformation. However, a better understanding of the diverse experiences and potentials of former female combatants is highly relevant for supporting gender responsive and transformative reconstruction and political processes in post-conflict societies.

The Berghof Foundation – an independent non-profit organisation, supporting people in conflict in their efforts to achieve sustainable peace through conflict transformation and peacebuilding – has been contributing to documenting female ex-combatants’ experiences during and after conflict through participatory filmmaking. In cooperation with the GIZ sector programme “Promoting Gender Equality”, Berghof Foundation implemented the project From female combatants to post-war democratic leaders in Aceh (Indonesia), Mindanao (Philippines), Nepal, and Burundi. On this basis, the GIZ programme “Youth for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence in Mindanao” (YOUCAP) collaborated with Berghof Foundation on the project Female Ex-Combatants and the next generation: Dialogues on lessons of fighting for justice, focusing on an intergenerational dialogue between youth and former combatants on peacebuilding and justice in Mindanao.

Join us in a dialogue on the experiences of female ex-combatants and their roles in sustaining peace together with

  • Evelyn Pauls / Beatrix Austin, Project Manager & Researcher / Head of Department Conflict Transformation Research at Berghof Foundation
  • Jehan Usop, Moro Women Development and Cultural Centre, Mindanao Inc.
  • Meike Reinhard, GIZ programme “Youth for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence in Mindanao” (YOUCAP).

The discussion will be moderated by Nita Schaub (NICD community manager).
