International women’s day on 8th of March 2017
The International Women’s Day is worldwide celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women while calling for gender equality.
GIZ Rule of Law supports the Directorates of Women’s Affairs in six Northern provinces of Afghanistan, namely Balkh, Jawzjan, Baghlan, Kunduz, Takhar and Badakhshan to celebrate the International Women’s day on 8th of March 2017.
The day is marked around the nation with art performances, talks, networking events and conferences.
High ranking governmental representatives, civil society and women´s rights activist will actively participate in these events and reflect on women´s rights and the challenges they face in society such as violence and lack of awareness about their own rights.
For the first time, Volunteer Gender Focal Points who represent the Ministry of Women´s Affairs on local level, will be invited and given time to present the women´s situations in the districts. 12 women in Balkh and 10 women in Badakhshan province are voluntaryly serving as contact points for women in rural areas to support them with advice. They refer the women to the respective governmental or local institutions or try to mediate cases themselves.
To make women´s voices heard, especially from rural areas, is a focus of these year´s celebrations.
